Aphasia Camp Northwest Partners with Pacific University Rehabilitation Psychology

Portland, OR, June 10, 2011 – Stroke Camp services have expanded again! Rehabilitation psychology faculty from Pacific University’s graduate psychology program now join Stroke Camp’s rehabilitation disciplines of speech-language pathology (Portland State University), occupational therapy, and physical therapy (Pacific University) to give campers and their families a greater array of services. In 2011, Pacific University faculty, BJ Scott, and her students will assist with programs including family support sessions and other special sessions for stroke survivors with aphasia.

Aphasia Camp Northwest Receives Carter Award

Portland, OR, April 8, 2009 – Aphasia Camp Northwest was honored to receive the 2009 Carter Award for excellence in campus-community partnerships at the annual Portland State University Simon Benson Awards Dinner. The award was presented by former first lady, Rosalyn Carter, on behalf of the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation (JRCPF), a organization that provides grants to recognize the best practices in school-community projects and the best new ideas for student-led community service projects.

As the award winning community-university partnership team, Aphasia Camp Northwest will receive $10,000 for capacity building and scholarships for students and campers in need.

Aphasia Camp Northwest was honored to be among the other laudable 2009 Carter Award finalists, including Portland State University’s Community ESL Project and the Portland Public Schools Migrant Education Program.

 

The Faith Gabelnick Endowed Fund for Community Service Honors Stroke Camp Northwest

Forest Grove, OR, May 11, 2009 – Faculty and suppoters of Aphasia Camp Northwest were pleased to learn that the program had been awared one of the four 2009 Faith Gabelnick Endowed Fund for Community Service Awards.

Wishing to honor the significant contributions made by Dr. Faith Gabelnick during the eight years of her presidency (1995 - 2003), the Board of Trustees of Pacific University established the Faith Gabelnick Fund for Community Service in May 2003. Emphasizing the importance of service learning, community partnerships, and philanthropy as tools to promote an informed, engaged citizenry, President Gabelnick worked tirelessly to link theory to practice at Pacific, leaving a legacy reaching far beyond the confines of campus and stretching well into the local and national communities. The Faith Gabelnick Endowed Fund is to provide a permanent resource for support of University programs or projects designed specifically to engage students and faculty in the pursuit of community service and altruism.
